TRIBES OF MANIPUR: POPULATION AND EDUCATION*

Abstract:
Scheduled tribe population, as per census data, has stabilized or rather declined in Manipur due to the dismally low growth of Naga population. Changes in the attitude of son preference and increased in male mortality due to conflict has led to improvement of sex ratio. Population of ethnic Kuki-Chin-Mizo (KCM) has overtaken to the Nagas recently. Literacy rates and educated persons have substantially increased; yet, females are lacking behind in it. Nagas, like the generic tribes, appears to be more educated as compared to the KCM.
